Air Awakens by Elise Kova // Review
Air Awakens (Air Awakens #1) by Elise Kova, Self Published, Received in exchange for an honest review.
Vhalla has always been taught to fear the Tower of Sorcerers, a mysterious magic society, and has been happy in her quiet world of books. But after she unknowingly saves the life of one of the most powerful sorcerers of them all—the Crown Prince Aldrik—she finds herself enticed into his world. Now she must decide her future: Embrace her sorcery and leave the life she’s known, or eradicate her magic and remain as she’s always been. And with powerful forces lurking in the shadows, Vhalla’s indecision could cost her more than she ever imagined.
Air Awakens was a good book, but also very a frustrating one.
As a protagonist, Vhalla irritated me immensely. She discovers she has magic, at first is super apprehensive about it, and then slowly warms up to it and starts to like it. Then, for basically no reason whatsoever refuses to join the sorcerers as an apprentice in magic, and stays on as a library apprentice instead, a job she has now become to think of as mundane and boring. Uh… Okay? And that’s not the only example of a decision Vhalla needs to make in this book that should be easy and looks to be the most obvious thing ever but that she waffles back and forth over for the span of chapters.
There was also the “love triangle,” another thing that seemed totally obvious to me. Vhalla didn’t even like one of the guys at all so I don’t really know why we spent time on it.
What I did enjoy in this book was the magic system itself. It was a very simplistic, element based system, but I found it pretty enjoyable to learn about. Something that I think would have made me like this book lots more would have been if Vhalla had spent more time on learning magic
than she had on agonizing over ridiculously easy to solve problems.
I did also enjoy a few of the side characters (hello, Baldair and Fritz) and liked the small bits of history and other detail we learned about the world of this book.
Overall, I was interested by the plot of Air Awakens but was not enchanted by the main character.
